UMC, Inc. started as a family business in the early 70s under brothers, Ianthius and Nephi Barlow. Under their tutelage, the company grew and is led by their family members, including our vice president, Heber Barlow. Over the years, we’ve evolved from a family business to a large, trusted commercial plumbing and HVAC specialist. We now have over 250 employees and are working on some of our largest projects ever!
Our roots as a family-owned business have always guided us. Even though we aren’t all family now, we treat one another as family and work hard together. Finding the right employees, and fostering their growth and learning is a vital part of who we are.
We work with many of our employees from the time they start an apprenticeship all the way through to becoming fully certified. We have a long history of guiding our team to grow, providing opportunities to learn, and giving our employees the chance to take on new responsibilities and challenges.

- Service style leadership: We believe that the best leaders learn how to serve others. We want our employees to work together, to learn from one another, and help each other grow.
- Trust our team to succeed: We firmly believe that you can’t learn something unless you learn to do it yourself. Many of our employees are working toward their full trade certifications. We do our best to teach them how to do the job right every time, and then we step back and let them do it on their own. We give our employees the autonomy to succeed and take pride in their work.
- Attention to quality: In the past few years, we’ve experienced exponential growth. As part of this growth, we’ve worked with major contracting partners and firms. This process has taught us how essential attention to detail and high quality is. It doesn’t matter how big or small the project is. We do our best to deliver high-quality work every time. One of our proudest moments was being part of the winning team for the 2019 Utah Construction and Design Most Outstanding Multi-Family Project for the Pierpont Apartment complex. This project was a collaboration with Zwick construction and other partners. It was a great learning experience.
