Several years ago at UMC, our leadership team sat down and developed a list of company values to help guide us. Since then, these values have been a fixture here at UMC, and each team member is familiar with the values we strive to uphold at all times. Our values are integrity, safety, quality, service, initiative, ownership, teamwork, and education.
As we have been profiling different team members at UMC on our blog and social channels, we’ve asked each of them what our core values mean to them. Today, we’d like to share a few responses that have meant so much to us.
Heber Barlow, our president, said that our core values are our guiding principles here at UMC. He mentioned that when looking for people to join UMC, he always considers the core values we try to uphold. He wants each team member to maintain quality by being quick learners, paying attention, and always doing the job right. As our leader and president, Barlow helped to decide these values because he believes they will help the team succeed, which is why it’s so important to him that each member of the UMC team does their best to uphold our core values.
Ben Smith, one of our associate project managers, mentioned how impressed he is with the way the core values are communicated at UMC. As Smith said, the core values are reiterated at every major meeting, and everyone on the UMC team is expected to uphold the values. It’s one of the reasons he’s grown to love working at UMC because he knows he can trust his coworkers to act with integrity. Similarly, in our interview with Todd Roberts, he said he could tell in his first two days working at UMC how essential the core values were to the team at UMC. He could see immediately how everyone on the team was working to uphold the values.
Another UMC member, Ryan Dumont, our safety manager for Utah and Idaho, says that UMC’s commitment to safety as a core value makes them a leader on the job site. According to Dumont, UMC has a reputation for going above and beyond to ensure that everyone on the site follows safety regulations and that safety inspections are always completed. He said that UMC’s commitment to these values, especially safety, has been a night and day difference from job sites he’s been on in previous jobs.
As you can see, each member of the UMC team knows our commitment to the core values. These are just a few comments we’ve heard over the years. But it’s not just what people say about our core values that matter to us. It’s how we see our team members live and uphold them while working for UMC. We know that our core values have been a driving force in our incredible growth over the past few years, and that’s because of the commitment of each of our team members to living up to them!
