Recently, UMC, Inc. was profiled in the Utah Construction & Design magazine. It’s a fascinating article, and we encourage you to read it. The authors did a great job showing how our company has grown from a small family-owned operation to a team of 400+ employees and a leader of multi-family construction in our market.
One of the things we loved about this profile was how it talked about how we manage our growth. As any business owner knows, growth isn’t always a blessing. Too much growth can overwhelm your business if you’re unprepared to handle it. But here at UMC, Inc., we’ve embraced growth by preparing diligently. For example, the article mentions how our current President, Heber Barlow, in his early days as an estimator, approached his father, our founder Ianthius Barlow about purchasing estimating software. Heber recognized that this tool could help the company improve and handle growth. His approach was right, and we’ve since moved on to our proprietary estimating system, a move that has helped our company grow exponentially.
Of course, our success isn’t without hard work and effort, and it’s taken some time to find the right formula. One of the ways we found who we are as a company is by adopting our motto: “excellence is our standard.” This theme guides everything we do here at UMC, Inc., from installing a toilet to preparing a bid for a 300-unit build. That’s why our team strives to give their best and do their best work in all we do. That commitment to excellence has helped us grow in the past few years.
Now, UMC, Inc. stands at the precipice of another growth cycle. In 2023, UMC, Inc. is poised to generate over $100 million in revenue. A number that was just a dream only ten years ago, but now due to our team’s hard work and commitment to excellence, is a potential reality. As we look forward to our future growth, we feel confident that we have the tools to help us succeed. We’ve laid the groundwork by focusing on finding the tools that help us prepare by committing to excellence and trusting in one another. As our VP of Preconstruction, Lloyd Elliott, says in the article: “We’ve known this amount of working is coming, but we’ve been preparing for it. It’s gonna be fun to watch people stretch and grow to meet this growth. I’m excited to see the resolve from our team members.” We can’t wait to see it too!
