The rapid growth we’ve had at UMC, Inc. in the last decade has resulted from years of hard work and dedication. Nearly five years ago, our leadership team decided to sit down and determine our core values.
We wanted to establish values to guide us during the hard times and the good times. Values that would determine how we treat one another, how we work with others, and how we approach each project we take on. After much discussion, our leadership team landed on these eight values.
- Integrity. To us, you can’t be in the business and succeed without integrity. Mistakes and problems happen, and if you want to be seen as a successful company to work with, you have to work with integrity. We believe that integrity means doing the right thing. We don’t take shortcuts. We offer high-quality work each time, and we stand by what we’ve done.
- Safety. Our employees mean everything to us. We may have started as a family business, but we now have over 300 employees. We still want each employee to feel like family, and that means we look out for one another, follow all safety protocols, and never take chances.
- Quality. “Quality is never an accident. It is always the result of intelligent effort.” – John Ruskin. This is the belief we have. We believe in using high-quality materials and working hard to deliver quality workmanship that will stand the test of time. We stand by our work, and we always do our best. Our contracting partners know that they can trust us to deliver quality work each time.
- Service. This value is so important to us. We don’t believe that we just work together here at UMC, Inc. We believe we serve one another by treating each other with kindness and dignity and looking out for each other. We treat our contracting partners and clients the same.
- Initiative. Over the years, we’ve faced many challenges. Sometimes we could see a potential problem on the horizon and prepare for it, and sometimes it caught us unaware. But we always look for ways to improve and learn from each experience. That’s what initiative means to us, looking for the solution to challenges and making a plan to handle them.
- Ownership. “The success of a vision is determined by its ownership by both the leader and the people.” – John C. Maxwell. As a company, we have the vision to be the best in our region and field. We work hard to encourage each member of our UMC, Inc. team to be invested in our future and accountable to help us be our best.
- Teamwork. We need one another to learn and to grow. As a company that fosters continual learning and growth, teamwork is always top of mind for us. We encourage our employees to help one another and to work well together.
- Education. Most of our company leadership has come up through the ranks of nearly every position. We constantly work with apprentices and trainees to help them earn their journeyman certification and grow in their careers. We believe that education is the key to our success, and we are all part of educating one another here at UMC, Inc.
Our core values tell our partners everything they need to know about us. In the last few years, we have taken on small and large projects. We’ve expanded our reach in the intermountain west with projects in Utah, Idaho, and Colorado. Now, we’re even working on our largest project yet, the 21 story Liberty Sky tower in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. All of this work has resulted from our diligent efforts to live these core values each day. It’s no coincidence that our growth has been so great since we came up with these values.
